A little bit about the Icelandic Volcanos...

Due to Iceland's location on the mid-Atlantic Ridge, there is a high concentration of active volcanoes on the island. There are 30 active volcanic systems, 13 of which have erupted since the settlement in the 9th century.  The most devastating eruption took place in the 1780s. The eruption in Lakagígar, called Skaftáreldar (Skaftá fires), killed nearly a quarter of the Icelandic population and had widespread effects on the climate. It caused a thick haze to spread across Europe, causing illness in livestock, crop failure and famine. In 2010, the glacier Eyjafjallajökull erupted, causing major travel disruptions across northern Europe for several weeks.
